The social networking site Facebook has been quite busy as of late with new products announcements and updates. Recently, Facebook introduced us to Graph Search which is their own social search engine. With that product announcement out of the way, Facebook is shifting their attention to News Feed.
This Thursday, March 7th in Building 15 of their Menlo Park, California headquarters, the company has invited members of the press to see the “new look for News Feed.” The invitation seems pretty straightforward that this roll-out will in a big way be an update to Facebook’s home page. With Facebook having IPO’d last year, the goal has become to generate investor value and one way to do this is through advertising. During the company’s most recent quarterly call, Facebook confirmed that the new ads that they have introduced on the site have “barely” impacted user engagement and in fact, things have worked out “better” then they had hoped.
As such, it would appear that this may be the time to extend this monetization to News Feed. What isn’t known at this time is just how much of a change will be introduced to the desktop feed and to the mobile feed. Mobile Facebook will be playing a bigger role to Facebook’s bottom line in the years to come and as such, will be a big focus for monetization. In Q4 2012, mobile revenue brought in 23% of the ad revenue for that quarter. All of this will also come with richer types of media.
